La institución neoyorquina, fundada en 1904 por Archer Milton Huntington, ha sido galardonada por su papel en la promoción de la cultura y los valores de lo hispano y lo latinoamericano.
El acta, que ha sido leída por el presidente del jurado, el ex ministro de Asuntos Exteriores Marcelino Oreja, ha resaltado la importancia de la labor de la Hispanic «en un momento en el que la cultura hispana, reflejada en millones de personas, está pujando por mantener su presencia y vigor en toda América, con una muy relevante proyección hacia el futuro».
Fue Archer Milton Huntington (1870-1955), mecenas, filántropo, coleccionista e hispanista, quien fundó, en 1904, la Hispanic Society of America en Nueva York para la divulgación y el estudio de la cultura española en Estados Unidos. Los mayores tesoros de la Hispanic Society se pueden visitar en este momento en el Museo del Prado en Madríd. Destacamos cuadros de Goya, Velasquez, y 300.000 manuscritos.
